WHAT IS THIS FILE AND WHERE CAN YOU GET IT?
It’s a spice added to the gumbo, I was taught to add the file to the pot of gumbo after the cooking was complete. Turn off the heat and stir the gumbo well, then serve.
Gumbo file is made from the dried leaves of the sassafras tree.
Down in Louisiana along the bayous, you will find this spice in every kitchen.
My family adds file to every pot of gumbo.
