BETWEEN THE BAYOUS BONFOUCA AND LIBERTY
PRECIOUS MEMORIES
Back when I was just a boy and the shrimp were plentiful in the bayou, us kids would take the skiff in the afternoon. Then head to the mouth of the bayou, where we would begin digging clams by hand till we could fill two five gallon buckets.
Later on just before dark, we would head out early to claim our favorite shrimping spot. We used two poles to secure the skiff at both ends and also to hang our lanterns on, which from their bright light shrimp would come and feed off the cracked clams we used as a chum. Our favorite spot back then was where Bayou Bonfouca and Bayou Liberty met and became one.
In those days we used cast nets, and would cast over our chum bed. When the shrimp were plentiful, we could catch an ice chest full before heading back home.
The Bayou shrimp seemed to taste better then other shrimp caught elsewhere, maybe because they were so fresh, right out of the water and into the pot.
Just another day in the life of a bayou boy, fishing, crabbing, and hunting, what a wonderful childhood I had, surrounded by the best people in the world.
Thank You Jesus
